Between 1998 and 2000, 28% of the state's bicycle crashes occurred in the Houston region. Almost 2% resulted in fatalities.
 The City of Houston accounted for 56% of the region's crashes in this period of time. Among the principal causes for these incidents are speeding, failing to yield, failing to stop and DUI.
The Watch For Cyclists! Campaign brings together the City of Houston in partnership with AAA Texas and REI to raise road-sharing awareness among Houstonians with the Top 10 Tips to avoid cyclists on the road.
The Top 10 Tips help motorists and cyclists better understand the rules of the road. These tips teach how to recognize and avoid the most frequent instances of collision between motorists and cyclists.
AAA Texas, serving Texans since 1902, is an integral part of our campaign taking the lead in the radio efforts to deliver the Top 10 Tips.They will also share the tips with their members and sponsor bike reflectors--Get yours at any Houston Public Library while supplies last. AAA is also sharing the Watch For Cyclists campaign with the subscribers of their AAA Texas Journey magazine in the May/June 2007 edition. Look for it under the New Directions column. REI leads the campaign education effort with the retailing of the Watch For Cyclists! bumper sticker sold at REI stores in Houston. With the purchase of a bumper sticker you help REI to raise funds for further sponsorship of bike education and awareness efforts.
How can you participate? Give the Top 10 Tips to your family, friends and co-workers. Want to do more? Get a bumper sticker at any REI store. Learn the Top 10 Tips and show your road-sharing knowledge on the road when you're driving and when you're riding your bike.
